  7. mediumcloseup: Blue Valentine (2011) Dir. Derek Cianfrance 7/10 This film was almost incredible. It is really well crafted, wonderfully acted and it really strings on your emotions. I wonder if emotions are divided between the sexes of the audience though, I was totally sympathetic towards Gosling’s carefree boy in love and thought Williams to be rather cold. The interlocking of past and present is seamless but the slight problem the film had for me was in the narrative itself. I thought the past story of young love was done so well, I believed them when they just looked at each other. However I thought the narrative of the present although good, just felt a little under worked in terms of the actual stain on the relationship. So when things explode a little, it felt a little out of nowhere and I had to do little to keep up. With just some little added narrative tweaks this could have been a 9 outta 10. Oh and the soundtrack by Grizzly Bear is wicked and the the end credit sequence is a dream.
